Red Kite - Milvus milvus The red kite is afforded the highest degree of legal protection under the Schedule 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (as amended). Once critically endangered and confined to a population in Wales, the species is now on the road to recovery through a successful UK wide re-introduction scheme. Adder - Vipera berus The Adder is a protected reptile species under the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 (as amended) Schedule 5: section 9. It is the most northerly member of the Viper family and is found throughout Britain in a variety of suitable habitat including open woodland, hedgerows, moorland, sand dunes, heathland. Water Vole - Arvicola terrestris From April 2008 the water vole receives an increased level of protection under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (Variation of Schedule 5) (England) Order 2008. The water vole is now fully covered by the provisions of section 9 of the Act and this increased protection adds prohibitions against intentional killing, taking or injury, possession and sale.
